Family to honor Kuykendall
Hendersonville, North Carolina
October 25, 2000
FLAT ROCK - A patriot of the American Revolution will be honored Saturday in a ceremony at the cemetery of the
Mud Creek Baptist Church.
The ceremony will dedicate a new monument for the grave of Abraham Kuykendall, a captain in the N.C. Militia from
1770-83.
"This is an important event in our family's history," said descendant Charles Kuykendall. Abraham was
"an important man in Colonial North Carolina and in the early history of Henderson County."
Hendersonville Mayor Fred Niehoff and Flat Rock Mayor Terry Hicks have issued official proclamations declaring
Saturday as Abraham Kuykendall Day.
The Abraham Kuykendall Chapter of Daughters of the American Revolution is working with members of the Kuykendall
family to host the event.
The monument, a marble obelisk, is 8 feet tall. Two bronze plaques, one from the Daughters of the Founders and
Patriots of America and the other from the Daughters of the American Revolution, will also be dedicated.
Representatives of various historical societies and participation by adults and children in period costumes will
also be featured.
The public is invited. Descendants of Kuykendall from across the country are planning to attend.
Kuykendall was appointed captain of a safety committee, which governed Tryon and Rutherford counties during the
Revolutionary War years. He was later appointed justice of the peace and justice for the Court of Pleas and Quarter
Sessions by the General Assembly of North Carolina.
Kuykendall was one of the earliest settlers of Henderson County. In 1779, he obtained the first known land grant
in the area now known as Flat Rock.
Kuykendall donated the land to the church for its cemetery and its original church buildings. He eventually acquired
nearly all of what is today historic Flat Rock.

Abraham is buried at Mud Creek Baptist Church in Flat Rock, Henderson Co., North Carolina (formerly Buncombe Co.,
North Carolina) He has been honored by the SAR, the DAR, the Town of Flat Rock and Hendersonville, and a chapter
of the DAR in Flat Rock has been named for him.

Kuykendall, and my GG Grandfather. He was born in Vincennes(Knox Co)
Indiana. At the start of the Civil War, he enisted in the Confederate
Army. Was captured and signed a Amestry card. Later, he joined the
Union Army. A few weeks ago I received his personnel papers from the
National Archives. On one of the papers he had to answer questions about
his personnel life when he filed for a pension. 18 Dec1830 was the
correct birthdate. He died 16 Dec 1907. Anything else you would like let

My gg grandfather was Thomas A CROCKETT born 1812 married Eliza WARREN in Madison Co. Ms. Thomas and Eliza lived
in Old Flora in Smith Co., Tx. They died aft 1860 but I haven't found out where they are buried. Another gg grandfather
was John TERRY who married Nancy BEENE dau. of Jessie BEENE and Mary KUYKENDALL. John lived in old Flora also.
I think there is a cemetery on the land owned by John Terry and that they may all be buried there. I have heard
that this cem. is on private pro perty and was hard to get to. Does anyone know anything about this cemetery or
any of these people?

JOHN WILLIAM KUYKENDALL was born on 26 December 1797 in Kentucky (10-11) and married Mary or Polly Key who was
born about 1805/09 in Tennessee (10) or South Carolina. He was a doctor, practicing the Thompsonian system.
John was raised in Tennessee, probably moved to Mississippi and then he and his brother James came to Texas about
1848 and settled at Harmony Hill, Rusk County. This settlement was then called "Nip and Tuck" and was
located on the "trace" or stage route of that time. John Kuykendall gave the first two acres of land
for Harmony Hill Cemetery in 1852.(4)

Martha Mariah Jackson was born February 6, 1847 in Springfield County, Georgia. Her death certificate states that
her parents were Gatsey Brooks and Daniel M. Jackson. Martha married Charles Stuart Blalock on Sep 7, 1865 in Harrison
County, Texas. He was a veteran of the Civil War. Martha applied to the state of Texas for a widow's pension and
she said that she had been orphaned and raised by Jimmie Kuykendall of Harrison-Hills, Rusk County, Texas. The
1870 Census shows James Kuykendall living in Rusk County with his wife, Gatsey. A search at Ancestry.com shows
that James Kuykendall married G. A. Jackson on 29 Oct 1861 in Panola County, Texas. I believe that Mrs. G. M. Kuykendall
is the mother of Martha Jackson Blalock who was buried in the old Blalock/Munden Cemetery.

I think we descend from the same Matthew Kuykendall, Mine was married to a Nancy Johnson also. And He was born

You are right, there are sooooo many Matthew Kuykendall's that it can get confusing, especially, if you do not
have much info to go on.
Jacob G. had a son Named Matthew Thomas Kuykendall Born 1835, and he had a son named Matthew Rutland Kuykendall
Born 1879. So you see that first name was prominent in our Kuykendall's.

A SUDDEN SAD DEATH
Early Tuesday morning the whole community was severly shocked when the report became current that Abraham W. Kuykendall
had died suddenly in his store. The circumstances surrounding his death are indeed sad.
Ever since he made proof on his claim, himself and wife have been living in the back of his store. On Tuesday morning
they arose about the usual time and Mr. Kuykendall built a fire and his wife cooked breakfast and was getting warm
water and fixing for him to wash and as he started to put his hands in the basin he suddenly stiffened up straight
and fell over backward between the stove and counter and died in a few seconds. Both doctors arrived on the scene
promptly, but while he was alive when the first on arrived, they could do nothing. At the time he fell himself
and wife were the only ones in the store and her screams soon brought assistance.
The funeral was held at the Gray school house at two o'clock Christmas day, the services being conducted by Revs.
Dewitt Sankey and Mayness. The largest concourse of people that have ever attended a funeral in this part of the
country was present.
Abraham W. Kuykendall was well known throughout this region, as he was one of the first of what is known as the
new settlers, and himself and wife established the first store in Gray which they managed to the time of his death.
He had an unlimited number of friends and was a man whose advice was sought and eagerly accepted by a score of
people in important business matters, and he will be greatly missed here. He came from a family that has made a
remarkable record, his father having been a Primitive Baptist minister for 96 years and lived to the age of 114
years. His mother lived to the age of 98 years, and he had one brother that was 120 years old when he died. Counting
his brothers, sisters, and half brothers and half sisters there were 21 children in the family. Two of his brothers
and Mr. Kuykendall were solid consistant members of the Primitive Baptist church. He leaves a wife, two sons, a
daughter, three brothers and a host of friends to mourn his loss and reverance his memory.

Every now and then an old blind hog will find an acorn. When I saw the AI Kuykendall bit about New Mexico it rang
a bell. Many years ago I wrote a bio. on Benjamin Stracener Kuykendall from Comanche, Texas, who in later years
moved with his whole family to outside of Carlsbad, NM. Ben's father & mother & some siblings stayed in
the area (New Mexico) and he, Ben, moved on out to Ariz. where he later died in 1937.
A.I. Kuykendall is the eldest child of James H. & Martha M. Jones Kuykendall. James H. K. was the son of Abraham
and Mary Lindley Kuykendall. Abraham was the son of Matthew & Nancy Johnson Kukendall.
Father James H. K. would move originally to Rusk Co. Texas.
A.I Kuykendall married Elizabeth Y. (Big) Baggett, b. ca. 1852-d. 4 April 1923 at Slaton, Lubbock Co., Texas. Family
wrote a story of an Indian raid on the Baggett home in 1862 when Big was 10 years old. Big was shot in the raid,
recovered, married AIK and they had 9 children.

NANCY ANN KUYKENDALL was born on 22 November 1825 and died on 15 April 1893.(1) She first married a "Grimes"
who died shortly thereafter. They had one son, George Grimes. She married, second, on 20 November 1852 at Nip and
Tuck, (2) William A. Miles (see Miles) who was born on 12 April 1828 in Franklin County, Tennessee,(3) and died
on 10 September 1910.(1) They are buried in the Gum Springs Cemetery, just east of Longview, Texas.
William Miles served in the War with Mexico and with the Texas Cavalry in the Civil War. He had his arm blown off
in battle, and had to swim the Mississippi River near Memphis with only one arm to get back to his family. Starting
from scratch after he got back to his family, he still had the ability to amass a fortune from farming during his
lifetime. They lived in Harrison County, mostly in the Longview area, and around Hallsville.
Nancy had one son, George Grimes, by her first husband, and she and Bill Miles had seven daughters (see Miles)

WILLIAM ASBURY MILES was born on 12 April 1828 in Franklin County, Tennessee,(2) and died on 10 September 1910.
On 11 November 1851,(3) he married, as her second husband, Nancy Kuykendall (see Kuykendall) who was born on 22
November 1825 and died on 15 April 1893.(1) They are both buried at Gum Springs Cemetery, near Longview, Texas.
He lived his first 10 years in Tennessee. The family moved to Illinois in 1838 where his mother died and is reported
to be buried near the present site of Cairo, Illinois. In 1839, they moved to Mississippi and after the War with
Mexico, Bill Miles moved to Rusk County, Texas, in January 1850, and to Harrison County, Texas, in 1854.(2)
Bill Miles served with the First Mississippi Battalion, Company E, 14th Texas Cavalry, Confederate States of America,
in the Civil War.(4) He had one arm shot off with a "mini-ball" just above the elbow. Enroute home he
swam the Mississippi River near Memphis with only one arm.
Bill Miles was a very capable person and amassed a fortune in farming after he returned home from the Civil War.
His ability was recognized throughout the community and he was the neighbor- hood advisor on all matters pertaining
to farming and business.
The children of William and Nancy were: Mary Elizabeth, born 23 September 1852, died 11 July 1923, and married
William McKay; Martha Olerra, born in 1856, and married Ike Russell ; Laura Texana (see above), born 30 January
